Turmeric Juice : A Powerful Healing Beverage

It is no wonder there has been so much buzz around turmeric in recent years. Although it has long been used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, the West was not as aware of its medicinal value. However, as modern scientific research delves into the many properties of this pungent, golden spice – a common ingredient in many Indian dishes and curries — more and more comes to light about the many amazing things it can do.

Turmeric: a Panacea?

Turmeric has been found to be able to alleviate an astounding array of illnesses and complaints. It is excellent for detoxifying the liver and allowing it to function more efficiently to remove unwanted substances from the body. It also helps boost the metabolism to aid in weight loss and can help treat conditions as diverse as depression, psoriasis and arthritis. Below is a recipe for how to make a turmeric “juice” so you can begin reaping these benefits.

Ingredients and Supplies

  • 5-7 inches of turmeric root
  • 5-7 tamarind pods
  • 2 lemons
  • Raw honey
  • Water
  • Blender
  • Strainer
  • Bowl
  • Lidded glass jar

Directions

Peel the turmeric root. This will stain your fingers and the cutting board, but this will come out with a good wash. Then crack the tamarind open; make sure to remove the inner roots as well. Fill a pot with water, put in the turmeric and boil for about 20 minutes. The water will be a deep golden color. While the turmeric is boiling, get a second pan and pour in one inch of water along with the tamarind. Move the fruit around with a wooden spoon so that it can melt and dissolve: the result will be a jam-like consistency. When the texture looks soft and the seeds come out, remove from heat and let mixture cool. Set this aside and return to the turmeric mixture, pouring it into the blender and processing. Go back to the tamarind mixture and pour it through the strainer, removing any seeds or peels and using only the soft fruit. Pour this soft fruit into the blender and process again so that it is mixed with the turmeric. Squeeze lemon into the blender and process one more time. Pour into the lidded jar, add honey to taste and store in the fridge for 3-4 days.

If you drink this “juice” daily, you will receive all the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits that turmeric has to offer. This juice can boost your immunity, be a great aid to weight loss if you are trying to shed unwanted pounds and can even make it less likely for you to develop serious conditions like cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. It might just be the closest thing to a panacea that we have ever found!
