Oxytocin is the hormone of human love and bonding. It is the hormone that allows for healthy contractions during childbirth and for the let-down of human breastmilk/colostrum immediately after birth.
Oxytocin makes a HUGE contribution toward the activation of the neurobiology of love at birth — and this activation is essential for the proper brain and neurological development of the infant, and also to the well-being of the entire family.
When the neurobiology of love activates at birth (through eye contact, or skin-to-skin contact, pheromones coming from the baby’s head, etc.), mom and baby (and dad if he is present) can experience extremely profound levels of human bonding and human bliss. So important is this experience, that it can bond a family forever or, if trauma is present, cause a family to break down over time.
The most important thing for people to understand is this… Whenever technological interventions are introduced during birth, the production of natural oxytocin (and other opiates and beta-endorphins) is undermined. This is especially true when synthetic oxytocin (pitocin) is introduced during or immediately after labor, or when trauma of any kind is inflicted on the baby or the mother during labor and within the first hour after birth.
According to this article, pitocin is used in 81% of hospital births. I would venture to say that the real number is actually higher and that we should all be extremely concerned about what the use of this drug is doing to our children and our families.
Every single hospital birth protocol undermines the capacity for mother, father, and child to bond. Damaging technological interventions disrupt the production of natural oxytocin, and these include (but are not limited to) induction, amniotomy, fetal heart monitors (especially the internal ones that are literally SCREWED into the baby’s skull), the use of cytotec, pitocin, demerol (or any drugs whatsoever) during labor or immediately after birth, c-section, the unnecessary, sadistic, and violent clamping and cutting of the umbilical cord, the theft of infant cord blood, oral suctioning, putting ointment in the baby’s eyes so that his/her eyes burn and he/she cannot make eye contact with his/her parents, infant swaddling (which prevents skin-to-skin contact, restricts all movement, and causes baby to go into parasympathetic shock), highly toxic vaccinations immediately after birth, so-called vitamin k shots, separating mother and child for any length of time during the first hour after birth, neonatal intensive care unit (which are brutal), circumcision, and the list goes on.
