How Neurofeedback Therapy Helps with ADHD and ADD

More and more folks are looking for options other than medication when it comes to treatment of ADHD. One of the most beneficial alternative means of improving ADHD symptoms is neurofeedback therapy (NFB).

Neurofeedback for ADHD and ADD is now being utilized in schools across the country with outstanding results. In 2014, Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics published a study that demonstrates how neurofeedback therapy has helped students become more successful.

How Neurofeedback Affects the Brain

Although quite sophisticated in its assessment and delivery methods, the NFB process is easy to understand. Electrodes are placed strategically on the head, often by the direction of a brain map, or quantitative EEG assessment. The neurofeedback system then records brain wave activity. This activity is ‘fed back’ to the client through sounds and/or visual cues. A clinician monitors brainwave changes throughout the process. When the brain demonstrates an ability to remain in the brainwave ranges specified by the clinician, the client receives feedback. When brainwaves are not in the appropriate ranges they receive no feedback. This causes the client’s brain to begin developing strategies to return to the desired brainwave states.

The more frequently the client can do neurofeedback training, the faster the brain learns the necessary strategies to achieve desired brainwave states. In the case of ADHD, the neurofeedback training targets and cultivates brainwave states that support focus and attention. In this same manner neurofeedback can help someone with ADHD to reduce the brainwaves that encourage anxiety and impulsive behavior.

Brain Training in Action

At APEX Brain Centers we create customized Brain Training Programs that target our clients’ personal goals. We utilize state of the art BrainMaster qEEG and NFB technology. This research-grade equipment and software allows us to precisely measure brain activity and deliver the most current technological applications available in NFB today. Oftentimes we utilize transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) with NFB to allow us to deliver the desired results in a much shorter time frame with longer lasting results.
