I’m not very hard core when it comes to fasting and detoxing.  Some would say I’m downright whimpy.  I’ve considered doing the lemonade master cleanse you see circulating all over the place. I have read incredible testimonies of how great it works and I’ve read horror stories of people who pass out or worse from an intense lemonade detox/fast.  So as not to throw out the baby with the lemon water so to speak, I’d like to propose a simple and easy way to safely reap the many benefits of a lemon detox that anyone can and should do.

Drinking lemon water can help you lose weight, detox, have more energy and even clear up skin problems.  Lemons pack a pretty powerful punch with tons of Vitamin C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and just the right amount of sodium.  Since our bodies do a bit of housecleaning and removing toxins while we sleep, it is a huge benefit to drink 8oz of lemon water in the morning before eating anything to help flush out these toxins.  There is even a good bit of fiber in the lemons that assist as an anti-bacterial flush of the colon.

Interesting and Bizarre ways to use Lemons

Lemons have been attributed to these interesting and sometimes bizarre health claims: antidepressant, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, immune stimulant, diuretic, digestive aid, anticancer, expectorant mucus busting and calming. This praised citrus has been used for air purification, as an antioxidant, alleviating anxiety, cleaning carpets, curing colds, increasing concentration, relieving constipation, treating Cushing’s syndrome, disinfecting anything, reducing fever, treating gout, diminishing the effects of a hangover, as a furniture polish, removing stains from laundry, defeating kidney stones, as a relaxant, stress reliever, curing varicose veins and for water purification.   Please pass the lemonade (without the refined sugar of course)!

How to Use Lemon Water Safely

Now before you begin eating several lemons a day, please use caution.  Although it seems more of a good thing is better, you will want to build up to a decent amount gradually.  Start with just 1-2 Tbsp of pure squeezed lemon juice in your water especially in the morning before eating anything else. You can gradually increase this up to 6-8 Tablespoons daily.  You should spread out the drinking of lemon water throughout the day as well. You will be skinny, full of energy and have glowing skin while cleaning everything in your entire house with lemon.  Perhaps we should all plant lemon trees (since they aren’t cheap) in our homes for immediate and free access.

A quick note of caution is to rinse your mouth with plain water after drinking lemon juice to prevent enamel erosion on your teeth. Swishing with plain water will prevent these issues.

Another great way to get your lemon fix is to use it as an essential oil.  Lemon Essential Oil promotes health, healing, physical energy, and purification.  The fragrance is very invigorating and warming and is amazing to improve concentration.  It is very uplifting to the body and mind.
