What Is Obesity?

Obesity is accumulation of excess fat in the body which affects adults and children. Obesity may increase the risk of developing some medical conditions such as high blood pressure, arthritis, sleep apnoea, immobility, diabetes, asthma, cancer and heart diseases.

What causes Obesity?

The utmost important factor is the genetic structure of an individual which decides how likely a person can become obese.

Physiological factors also plays an important role in obesity.

In 15-20% of women, sometimes pregnancy may attribute to obesity.

Metabolic rate is another deciding factor for obesity. The rate at which body burns the food varies in every individual. People with slow metabolic rate may need less calorie food to maintain the body weight and someone with increased metabolic rate will need high calorie food.

Sedentary lifestyle is a big enemy as it is the major cause of obesity.

Excessive food intake which contains high calories and fats causes obesity. Some eating disorder also results in obesity.

Few medicines or drugs such as steroids may cause obesity.

Lack of physical activity and exercise may contribute to obesity

 

Herbs and Herbal remedies for weight loss

Guggul is a herbal remedy obtained from Commiphora mukul tree or the mukul myrrh tree. The gum resin in the tree has been used in traditional Ayurvdic medicine in India to treat a wide range of health problems and diseases. Guggul extract contains a plant sterol called guggulsterone, which offers anti-tumor, anti-angiogenic and cholesterol-lowering activities. Guggul promotes weight loss by activating thyroid gland to stimulate metabolism rate and other bodily actions. Guggul is especially effective in promoting weight loss.

Garcinia Cambogia or vrikshamla extract includes a substantial amount of HCA (60%) which helps in weight loss. It helps to lose weight effortlessly. It normalizes serotonin levels so people are less likely to experience hunger cravings. It also helps in improving fat metabolising, development of lean muscle mass and reducing stress-triggered cravings.

Triphala is not actually an herb but a powder derived from three fruits named Haritaki, Amalaki and Bibhitaki. Triphala promotes weight loss by enabling the body to process and excrete wastes and toxins very often. It helps in proper digestion, flushes off the system and lowers the water content in the body which eventually results in reduced hunger drive.

Katuki improves the gall bladder secretions and helps in digestion of fats. The roots, leaf, bark and specially rhizomes are widely used for therapeutic purpose. Katuki has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and immuno-modulatory activities. It helps with indigestion and constipation. It improves fat metabolism and hence it is used as natural herb for weight loss.

Neem is a multipurpose herb as it is used in treatment of multiple diseases. It has anti bacterial, anti fungal, anti protozoal and anti viral activities. Neem leaves are great source of fiber as it contains 20% fiber with fat, calcium, amino acids and proteins. Neem promotes weight loss by improving digestive capacity of the body and by making intestine more active.

Cinnamon has sweet and pungent flavour. Cinnamon helps in quick metabolism and regulates blood sugar. It also plays a major role in reducing LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It helps in weight loss by controlling insulin levels, decreasing blood sugar, burning fat, suppressing appetite and speeding up the metabolism.

Aloe vera juice can work miraculously for weight loss as it acts as a natural antioxidant and retards the production of free radicals. It assists the weight loss due to its laxative effect, detox effect and increased metabolism effect.

Ginger is beneficial for overall digestion process as it helps the food to move through the stomach, small intestine and large intestine very smoothly and helps in losing the weight much easily. Since ginger has high fiber content, it increases gastrointestinal (GI) motility. Ginger helps in increasing the metabolism rate and thus burns off the excess fats accumulated in the body and promotes weight loss.

Black Cumin or Nigella sativa is useful for weight loss as it increases the body metabolism rate. It also has some anorexia and anti-obesity activities. It decreases the weight gain triggers such as diabetes and appetite.

Licorice is a herbal remedy for weight loss and fat reduction. Licorice root soothes the digestion process and promotes the bowel movement. Licorice root extract helps to reduce body fat and aids in weight loss.
