People all over the county are learning to make natural household cleaners on their own, using simple, around-the-house ingredients like white vinegar, baking soda or lemon juice and are finding out just how effective these cleaners can be. One thing that makes them even more effective is the use of essential oils, such as lavender oil, to clean and disinfect better than any commercial cleaner.

Lavender, whose Latin name is Lavandula angustifolia, has been used since at least Roman times for its various medicinal and healing properties, and is still widely used in Europe today for both a natural remedy and natural household cleaner. It is one of the best oils for green cleaning, especially if you prefer a light, floral smell to the somewhat stronger aromas of, for instance, rosemary or eucalyptus oil (though they are very effective, too!). It has proven antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that can cleanse and deodorize your house without the use of harsh commercial chemicals. Let it set for a few minutes, then vacuum it up.

Laundry Additive –  For laundry that comes out of the wash with a fresh, floral scent, don’t use chemically-laden fabric softener! Instead, add a few drops of lavender oil to the washing machine while you are doing your laundry. It will both disinfect and deodorize your clothes.Household Disinfectant.

For a great, DIY household spray–  add 2 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of bergamot oil to 2 cups of white vinegar. Pour into a spray bottle and used to disinfect surfaces all over the house.

Air Freshener – If you want a spray that will truly freshen the air without harmful chemicals, combine 15 drops lavender oil, 10 drops orange oil and 10 drops lemon oil into 2 ounces of distilled water and two ounces of alcohol. Shake ingredients together in a spray bottle and spritz around the house to leave your home smelling fabulous!
