Free and Perpetual: Top 5 Foods You Can Regrow

image

It’s easy to follow these instructions and grow a good variety of vegetables. It’s simple, organic and totally amazing.  Almost anyone can grow vegetables from a seed or young plant, but growing them from scraps is way more impressive.  The fact that you do this on a window sill indoors also makes your “crops” climate proof!

1. Green Onions (Scallions) – This is the one to start with for guaranteed success.  Take the discarded root and place root side down in a small glass jar.  Put enough water to cover them.  Change the water after a couple days.  You won’t believe how fast these grow.  Within 2 days you will see them starting.  Within just 1 week you will have 3-4 inches of fresh green onion on top.

2. Romaine lettuce – Cut off the bottom of a fresh head of lettuce (don’t wait until the lettuce has gone bad).  You can do this in water or soil.  Soil will produce twice as much but water will work.  If you are using water just add about 1 inch of water in a glass jar large enough to support the head as it grows.

3. Basil – Choose a 4-inch basil stem and use a sharp blade (not scissors) to cut just below a leaf node – the part on the stem where new leaves/stems sprout. Strip any leaves from 3/4 of the stem then place in a glass of water and leave in a very bright but not too hot place until roots start to form on the stem. Change the water every couple of days.  Once the roots are around 2-inches long, plant them in small soiled pots. Water and place in direct sunlight.

4.  Celery – Follow the instructions for Romaine Lettuce.  After three days in water you should replant the celery bottom in soil.

5. Ginger – Put a chunk of ginger root in soil with the newest buds facing up and it will start to grow. When you harvest, pull the whole root, remove a piece of it, and plant it again to keep the cycle alive.

And just for your information an avocado pit will grow into an avocado tree.  It will take anywhere from 5 – 13 years to produce avocados but thought you’d like to know it can be done!

Healthy Blessings,
