How Pringles Are Made
If you thought stackable chips came from potatoes, you couldn’t be farther off the truth than that. Pringles, and other stackable chips, are made from a slurry of wheat, rice, corn, and potato flakes.
This slurry is cut into thin, round discs and pressed on a curve-shaped mold that moves though boiling oil. After that they are sprayed with all sort of chemically flavored powders and stacked in a can.
Pringles even admits they are not making actual potato chips! This was, of course, to avoid higher taxes on luxury foods like potato chips.
Chips Loaded With Cancer-Causing Chemicals
While the slurry and flavored powders are loaded with colorants, preservatives and other additives, the one extremely harmful compound found in chips isn’t added intentionally. Acrylamide, a potential neurotoxic chemical linked to cancer, is one of the byproducts of the production process.
It is created when carbohydrate-rich foods – such as chips, French fries, cereals, and other baked goods, are baked, fried, toasted, or roasted at high-temperatures.
How Much Acrylamide Are We Consuming
While it isn’t possible to avoid all acrylamide, leaving a few foods out of your diet and eating tons of raw veggies and fruits can have a tremendous effect.
Acrylamide is also found in our drinking water, but levels are so low that or body can easily eliminate it from our system before it can do any damage.
The federal limit for acrylamide in drinking water is about 0.12 micrograms in one cup of water. Fried or baked foods – such as chips and French fries – can pack 500 times more acrylamide than allowed.
This came to the world’s attention in 2008. Many chips manufactures promised to bring the acrylamide levels down. Follow-up and new testing results were never published.
FYI: oven-baked chips are marketed as the healthier version, but they may be even worse than fried chips. According to the FDA, baked chips can contain up to 3 times more acrylamide compared to regular chips.
But Acrylamide Is Not The Only Questionable Ingredient
Pringles and other high-heated snacks are packed with preservatives, additives, and chemical flavors. Many of these commercially used food additives have been linked to cancer and many other life-threatening diseases.
Pringles, and many other heavily processed foods, are not only questionably made, they are also depleted from most of the vital nutrients our body needs for optimal health.
