What Causes a Toothache?

Millions of people suffer from an annoying toothache or tooth pain. The major cause of toothaches are cavities, decayed teeth, broken and chipped teeth or loose teeth. There are steps people can take to eliminate or alleviate their toothache.

3 Ways to Avoid Living With Tooth Pain

Having healthy teeth is important for several reasons:

  • Good oral hygiene, enhanced personal appearance, and overall health.
  • Bad teeth affects a beautiful smile, and causes gum diseases.
  • Bad teeth also affects the heart, and interferes with proper eating habits.
  • When toothaches exist, it is apparent that the tooth or teeth are in need of dental attention.

There are at least three important steps individuals can take to help reduce or eliminate toothaches;

1- Avoid eating sugary foods, and drinking acidic drinks.

Sugar and acid destroys the enamel on the teeth. The enamel is the permanent protective coating on the surface of the teeth. Eating sweets in moderation, and brushing afterwards can prevent toothaches. Some teeth are sensitive to sweets, and to hot and cold foods and drinks.

The best way to avoid toothaches is to avoid foods with sugars. This includes pies, cakes, hard and soft candies, and soda pops.

2- Brush, floss and rinse regularly.

Taking care of the teeth should be a daily routine. Parents have instilled this in their children centuries ago, and the same rules apply today. Brushing the teeth and gums, as well as the tongue can greatly reduce tooth decay, which most likely causes tooth pain.

The pattern of reducing tooth pain begins with brushing after each meal, flossing with gentle dental wax floss, and rinsing every day with an antiseptic mouth wash. This daily ritual will kill thousands of oral germs.

3- Visit the dentist regularly.

Visiting the dentist on a regular basis will ensure that the dentist catches the smallest cavities. Small problems are easier to spot and contain, than major problems. Once a cavity is spotted the dentist can fill the cavity. If the cavity is large and the filling is missing, and the teeth is severely damaged, the dentist might perform an extraction to prevent farther toothaches.

Toothaches are painful. Tooth pain let individuals know that there is a problem with their teeth or gums. Brushing and flossing the teeth regularly, and visiting the dentist at least twice per year can prevent tooth decay, which is responsible for toothaches.   The smallest dental problem can lead to major problems, if the problem is not addressed immediately.

Following a pattern of proper dental care starts at home, with parents teaching their children. However, preschools are now offering early dental care to preschoolers.
