2 Powerful Juice Recipes to Manage Diabetes

Diabetes, quite simply, is reaching epidemic proportions in this country. It is estimated that, as of this year, some 9.3% of the population – which comes out to nearly 30 million people – are suffering from this disease. This is made worse by the fact that there are so many potential complications from diabetes, including heart attacks and strokes, blindness, non-healing wounds, kidney failure and the high potential for amputations, just to name a few.

However, many of these serious complications can be avoided – and the disease itself even reversed – with changes in lifestyle like shedding excess pounds, staying active and making sure that one’s diet is varied and largely based on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and lean dairy and meats. Health beverages can help, too. The two recipes given below are loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables to provide the vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants that diabetics need to help with day-to-day treatment of their condition.

Celery-Spinach Juice

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups spinach
  • 1 apple, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cucumber, chopped coarsely
  • 2 stalks of celery, chopped coarsely
  • 1 carrot, peeled and chopped coarsely

Directions

Add all five ingredient together and juice in a juicing machine. Refrigerate and then enjoy.

The individual ingredients in this juice are a powerhouse of nutrition. The spinach, for instance, provides generous amounts of Vitamins A and B as well as calcium and antioxidants like beta carotene. Celery is a great source of minerals like potassium, sodium and magnesium while apples contain mallic acid, which has been proven to help with the normalizing of blood sugar levels. In short, these vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients combine to great improve the health of diabetics.

Orange-Grape Juice

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup fresh grape juice (from red grapes)
  • 1 apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 orange, peeled and divided into segments, seeds removed
  • 4 teaspoons sugar substitute
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 bottles sparkling water

Directions

Combine first five ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour equal amounts of mixture into four different glasses, then pour half a bottle of sparkling water into each glass. Serve immediately.

This juice is great for diabetics because the high fiber content means that the sugars in it will be absorbed more slowly and not interfere with blood sugar levels. It is also rich in antioxidants and has a strong anti-inflammatory effect which is also useful since inflammation is considered to be a factor in the diabetes disease process.

Diabetes is a serious condition with serious long-term health consequences. However, the good news is that this condition is one which can be greatly improved – and even reversed – with healthy lifestyle choices, such as weight loss, a balanced diet, regular exercise and choosing high-nutrient beverages such as the ones above which can great improve the general health of those coping with this disease.
