Most people who read a lot on natural health or medicine know that one of the big problems in medicine in the overuse of antibiotics. This has led to many problems, perhaps the most serious of which is the rise of bacteria that are antibiotic-resistant, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). While mainstream medicine struggles with this problem, however, natural therapies may be able to offer safer and more effective treatment options. One of these is thyme oil. Read on to find out more about what it is and what is can do!

What is Thyme Oil?

Thyme oil is the essential oil derived from the Thymus vulgaris plant, which is native to and common in much of the Mediterranean. In Mediterranean countries, this oil has long been valued for its medicinal properties: it is an antimicrobial, antispasmodic, anti-rheumatic and a natural expectorant, as well as being a calming and soothing herb. It has also been used for these qualities in Ayurveda, an ancient Indian tradition of healing. It can be utilized in many forms, including cooking, aromatherapy, potpourris and mouthwashes; it can also be made into elixirs.

How to Use Thyme Oil

Thyme oil has a number of uses for health and beauty, including the following:

  • Mouthwash: thyme oil, diluting with water and used as a mouth wash, can improve oral health.

  • Aromatherapy: when used in an infuser and inhaled, thyme can stimulate mental functions like memory and concentration as well as soothe down frazzled nerves.

  • Home remedy: thyme oil can be used as a home remedy to treat skin conditions like bites or sores, digestive problems like nausea, menstrual irregularities, arthritis and gout and even depression.

  • Hair and skin therapy: when add to shampoos or a lotion, thyme oil can help nourish and strengthen the hair and skin

Thyme Oil as an Antibiotic

Thyme’s antibacterial properties are well-studied and proven. In one study presented at the Society for General Microbiology Conference this year, researchers pointed to essential oils such as thyme oil as an a cost-effective and viable alternative to mainstream medicine in the fight against resistant bacteria. Its antibacterial properties can also be applied to food decontamination and to prevent spoilage and foodborne germs from effecting human health. Diverse trials have shown thyme oil to be effective against many forms of bacteria, including Salmonella and Enterococcus, both of which can be responsible for food poisoning.

So consider using thyme oil for its natural antibiotic properties. You will get effective protection against many strains of bacteria, including MRSA but without the more unfortunate side effects of traditional antibiotics, such as the killing off of both good and bad bacteria in the body. It has also proven to be useful in fighting even very resistant forms of bacteria that traditional medicine is currently struggling against.
