How To Minimize Your GMO Foods Intake

In 1978, it happened. Food that was changed by scientist attacked the world. No, there was not a real attack of food, but there was a movie that was released that year called Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.  The premise of that movie was about tomatoes had been altered, and they tried to take over the world.  Although a bad movie that deserved to disappear out of existence, the premise that the movie is happening.  Right now in the U.S., food is being changed through alterations of the genetic codes of many different foods, and it is hurting the population of this country.

Some of the changes are supposed to help the crops resist diseases, or use natural pesticides. In many cases the changes were to help crops grow throughout weather patterns that the crops normally would die.  In making the crops stronger, they made them hazardous for human consumption.  It is not that the ideas were not good.   The answer to those ideas was not correct.  What can the average consumer do, so that they do not eat genetically modified organisms (GMO)?

Sometimes the idea of paying attention to the ingredients in your foods has a stigma attached to it.  You may think that people perceive that you have a disease such as diabetes.  This is the reason why you have to look at the type of foods that you eat.  In today’s world, that is a misconception on everyone’s part.

You have to be careful with the different types of foods that you eat, not just the amount of food that you eat. The reason that you have to be careful is that GMO’s are in many foods, and they can be dangerous to your health.

So what are some of the most common GMO’s used today?

  • Papayas

Papayas have been altered; it has been genetically changed to resist viruses. Many of the countries around the world will not accept these types of fruits brought into their countries.Currently the U.S. and Japan import GMO Papayas.

  • Corn

Corn is the most common food that people know as a GMO product. It is also the most overused in various types of foods. It might be in a number of things that you are eating and you may not even know it, but if you look for it you will find it.Most commonly used, modified corn is found in foods such high-fructose corn syrup, cornstarch, and corn oil.Corn is also used in animal feed, so if you have an allergic reaction to that flank steak that maybe because the cow was fed corn feed.

  • Squash

Genetically modified squash is not one of the largest of foods that has been altered, but I have been genetically changed to resist viruses.

  • Milk

Cows are given hormones to produce huge amounts of milk. This hormone is banned for use around the world except for the U.S.Many of the distributors of dairy products do not sell milk that has been given hormones; unfortunately, some of people’s favorite forms of dairy such as ice cream have come from milk that has come from cows that have been given hormones.

  • Soy

Soy is the second most used genetically modified food next to corn. You will see it in such foods as tofu, soy sauce, and other types of foods. There are many times that foods are manufactured with soy, including breads and cereals.

GMO’s are in many foods.  Scientists design them, but in many instances, the different types of foods should not have been created because if the plants were truly meant to have survived, they would have been given those genes naturally.  It is not easy to watch for foods that are genetically modified, but you can start with a few of the most common foods, such as corn and soy, then you can discover which foods are genetically modified and stay away from them.
