3 Superfoods You Can Enjoy Everyday In Costa Rica

Some even say these superfoods reduce the risk of chronic disease and cancer!

1. Guanabana

Guanabana, also known as soursop, is a flowering, evergreen tree native to tropical regions. It is said that Guanabana is special because its green prickly fruit is known to kill cancer up to 10,000 times more effectively than strong chemotherapy drugs (without the nasty side effects and harm to healthy cells!)

Delicious in taste and spongy in texture, this superfood makes an awesome smoothie. Here in Costa Rica, Guanabana is often served fresh as juice, or frozen and then made into sorbet.

Here are some more reasons to give in to Guanabana:

• It has been found to kill parasites.
• It is super nutrient rich, containing Amino Acids, Ascorbic Acid, Calcium, Carbohydrates, Iron, Phosphorus, Fiber, Thiamine, and Riboflavin.
• It has anti-bacterial compounds found to help fight off infection and keep you healthy.
• It is high in soluble fiber that helps to relieve constipation.
• It has been found to relieve back pain. Boil 20 pieces of Guanabana leaves in 5 cups of water, simmering until only 3 cups of liquid is left. Drink 3⁄4 cups of this once a day.

• It is excellent for relieving water retention since it is a natural diuretic.

2. Chocolate / Cacao

While not a large exporter, Costa Rica is becoming more and more popular for its natural homemade chocolate. Here in Costa Rica, we like to simply call it Cacao.

In our culture, chocolate has been steadily making a comeback (did it really ever go away?) in popularity over the last few years. My own father went on a personal bandwagon when he joined a network marketing team, whose mission was to get everyone back on chocolate. Every phone call from me to him was how the chocolate was changing lives and how people were losing enormous amounts of weight on the product.

But let’s be clear. We are not talking about the chocolate bars you might by at the 7-Eleven. We are talking about bars that contain 80% or more of raw Cacao. Nowadays you can easily find how much cacao you are getting because it is stated on all chocolate wrappers, or at least those chocolates worth buying. Here in Costa Rica, it is not uncommon to find chocolate bars containing more that 90%, and even up to 97% cacao. Yes, those bars are 97% proof!

Here are some benefits of eating Raw Cacao!

1. Cacao contains up to 40 times the antioxidants of blueberries
2. They are the highest source of plant-based iron.
3. Cacao is full of magnesium that is not only important for a healthy heart, but crucial for a well functioning nervous system. In other words, cacao helps you to relax!
4. Cacao has more calcium than cows milk. Put down that cup of milk and pick up a chocolate bar!
5. Cacao is a natural mood elevator and anti-depressant. No wonder why we feel so good when we eat it!

 

3. Noni

Once known as the fruit of youth in Hawaii, Noni is also found in many areas of Costa Rica. It’s a stinky fruit and not all that pleasant to eat, but this superfood boasts a cure for whatever ails you. A secret Polynesian practice, Noni has been known to reverse the aging process and turn back time. But don’t take it from me–try it out for yourself!

Traces of use for Noni date back 2000 to 3000 years ago in Southeast Asia, where the ancient medicine called Ayurveda (Sanskrit word meaning the science of life – sister science to Yoga) was practiced. Ayurvedic practitioners noted that this food was beneficial for longevity and in balancing the body.

Here are four of the benefits of adding Noni, this wonder superfood, to your diet:

1. Noni is chock full of antioxidants that may help to prevent certain diseases.
