10 Foods You Should Always Buy Organic

Most people who want to lead a healthy lifestyle would like to buy all-organic groceries. However, because of economics, this sometimes just isn’t possible. Because of the way this food is raised and because it is not given government subsidies, organic food tends to be more expensive. However, there are some foods that you should always try to buy organic if possible, and ten of the most common ones are listed below.

Apples

Apples are the most likely fruit to have pesticide residues from conventional agriculture. It is a good idea, if you want to enjoy this delicious fruit, to make room in the budget for the organic versions and reduce the risk of pesticide contamination.

Strawberries

Because of the way they are grown and the fact that the whole fruit (including the skin) is eaten, strawberries are another food you should always buy organic to reduce risk of consuming pesticide residues.

Grapes

Conventionally raised grapes involve the use of heavy pesticides and fertilizer applications and are definitely among the foods that you should always try to buy organic.

Celery

Growing low to the ground, celery that is conventionally raised is at a higher risk for being contaminated with pesticide and fertilizer residues that you do not want in a healthy diet.

Peaches

Like apples, conventionally raised peaches are grown with heavy pesticide applications and are one of the most likely fruits to have pesticide residues.

Spinach

Like celery, spinach is a low-growing product with a greater chance of pesticide and fertilizer residues finding their way into your salad bowl. Organic spinach is a much safer way to go.

Nectarines

Especially if they are from overseas, nectarine orchard are subject to heavy pesticide application. This makes them much more likely to still have chemical residues if they have been conventionally raised.

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are mostly water and have a very thin membrane. This makes it more likely that they will absorb contaminants in the air and soil around them, including dangerous ones like pesticides and fertilizers.

Cherry Tomatoes

These luscious little treats are unfortunately heavily sprayed with pesticides as well, and since the skin of the vegetable is consumed, there is a higher risk of ingesting chemical residues.

Snap Peas

Especially if they are sourced from overseas, snap peas carry with them a high risk of chemical residues. This is especially a problem since, like the cherry tomatoes, the outer portion of the vegetable is consumed.

So even if you cannot afford to buy all your groceries organic, you can target certain fruits and vegetables like the ones listed above that are most likely to be contaminated if raised conventionally. This will be easier on your household budget but also help reduce the risk of consuming foods that are bring unwanted chemicals into your body.
